The Euganei was an ancient population between oriental Alps and the Adriatic, reconnect maybe with Liguri Ignauni. There was the Triumilini in Val Trompia, the Camuni in Val Camonica and the Stoni. Encourage by Venetians, went in the Alpine valleys and they mixed with Reti remain independent since the Roman conquest by Quinto Marcio Re (117 a.C.) and Scauro (115 a.C.).
The expression “Euganei Hills” is a linguistic invention of humanist pre-Renaissance which animated the cultural life of Padua. The same Francesco Petrarca in his letters speaks about Euganei Hills. In the period of High Middle Ages the hills were called in different way: Venda and Pedevenda, Colli Patavini, Agro Atestino.The come one after the other of population and culture left important historical testimony and we can see this thanks to the National Museum Atestino in Este, Polo Museale in Monselice and many archaeological sites in Montegrotto Terme.
Among the euganei countries, there is the medieval hamlet of Arquà Petrarca, the “Pearl of Euganei Hills”. The country conserve the tomb with the spoils of Petrarca and his house where he spent the last years of his life.
The walled cities.
The walled cities of Veneto were 37, also Este, Monselice and Montagnana. The succeed of the other popolation and culture left important historical testimony thanks to the Atestino Museum in Este where in the housing are hosted archeological materials more symbolic of the ancient Venetian’s culture, they lived in this region during all the I°millennium a.C.
The first city, farther to was be the capital of Ancient Venetians, today conserve a beautiful castle in the fourteenth century. The second, definited by ancient age “porta degli Euganei, conserve a precious castle transformed in a lordly residence by the Venetian family and an ancient medieval of Marcello and an ancient medieval Mastio.
The medieval influence is commmemorated with the turistics events of “Giostra della Rocca” and “Alla Corte degli Estensi”. Others castels in the Hills are Castel of San Martino in Vaneza (Cervarese S. Croce), the castle of Valbona, the Castle of Ponte della Torre in Este and the ruins of Rocca Pendice.
The archaeological sites in Montegrotto Terme, over the Archaeological Areas of Este, in different destination, are witnesses of two of the most important culture that they are bring closed in our territory (paleoveneta necropolis and Roman district residential).
Inside the Regional Park of Euganei Hills, surrouded by a hilly and rural landscape, we find 61 venetian villas. The character of the villas lay down inside the Park are chained with the Geography and the territory history : we go from the fourteenth-century “Casa del Petrarca” which has influenced most of the typology of the villa in ‘400, to the Catajo’s Castle when the venetian broke the wall’s fortress in favor of the peace and coexistence opera, Villa dei Vescovi in Luvigliano di Torreglia which was inspired Palladio for his “Rotonda”, Villa Barbarigo in Valsanzibio armed with one of the most beautiful park in the world and Villa Emo Capodilista in Montecchia, luxurious fighter casinetto, Villa Beatrice d’Este, with a rich collection of flora and fauna typical in this hilly euganea area which offer a lot of itinerary didactic in theme environmental, Villa Vigna Contarena in Este, builded in XIV century by the patrician venetian family of Contarini and Scrigni like hunting home and for parties during summer and the grape harvest period.
Today are manifold the Shrines in this territory and among the Abbeys, stand out Praglia’s abbey, jewel Reinaissance and important center of Benedictine spirituality, which host currently the national library, a national italian monument. Others faith places are Santuario Madonna della Salute in Monteortone in Abano Terme, Santuario della Madonna del Monte and Cappella di Sant’Antonio Abate (Monte Della Madonna), the ex Monastero degli Olivetani (Monte Venda), l’Eremo di Monte Rua (Torreglia), still inhabited by monk camaldolesi of isolation, Monastero di San Daniele in Abano Terme inhabited by benedectine of isolation nun, Santuario Giubilare of Seven Churches in Monselice with Pieve di S.Giustina, Monastero dei Francescani reascend in 1062 and Santuario della Madonna della Salute in Este.
