FAUNA
The Euganei Hills are an environment even diversificated for type and number of species, also whether they had an impoverishment the the past . The Regional Hills Park host many insectivorous mammiferous like hedgehog, mole and shrew. Some existent reptilian species in the territory are: lizards and green lizards in the areas with hot and dry climate, while snakes are in black variety. Another reptilian more signalize on the hills is the viper, which live in an outlying area and not busy. The humid areas host frogs, toads and special frongs (tree frogs).
The woods in winter host a big variety of birds, for example: woodcock, tordo bottaccio and fiedfare; while in the south vegetation there are: the robin,doll and blue tit. In Spring come the cuckoo, upupa and brook. Some nocturn predatory that we can see are: owls, barn owl, brown owl and the majestic falcon. A notable important species, present in the euganeo area with population is the hare. A protect area like Euganei Hills Park, immersed in a valley very anthropized and with strong hunting pressure, could function as an oasis for the resumption of this surrounding territory, where the hare is now disappearance in a wild state, and it is present only next the restocking operation.
In the Regional Euganei Hills Park there is the Fox, considered one of the most wild plunderers in the Europe.
The Fox’s pelage is typically brown-reddish on the top and whitish on the bottom, while the tail is red and thick . In the Euganei Hills there are a lot of fox’s exemplary, but unfortunately very difficult to see. In the nocturnal hours we can see her run on paths or at the roadside.
A very notable topicality is the presence of boar’s nucleus, certain they was born thanks to some exemplary in this territory in the course of years. A newspaper called “il Mattino di Padova” has writed an article, edited on 4th May 2017, that is about a control plan aginst boars, declaring that the regional hunt’s assessor Giuseppe Pan (answering to the councillior of Pd Andrea Zanoni’s bashing), has reassured that there won’t be any lawbreaking in the initiative, explaning that they don’t want open the hunt inside the Regional Park but it is only a capacity of the harmful species like boar.
FLORA
The Euganei Hills offer a surprising number of vegetables species. In this territory live species suitable to the summer climate and others suitable to the mountain climate.
The characteristic in the euganeo district is the classical maquis, made-up by a plant life whit short bole for the most part evergreen like: holm oak, arbutus,rock rose, turpentine tree and genista.
The vegetation is distribuited as a leopard’ stain, because it evolve on volcanic land, barren and rupestral exposé in the south.
In a few rupestral areas in “Rocca di Monselice” and “Oratorio di S. Antonio Abate “ you can find the Indian dwarf fig and the miniature cactus, native from central America. Precious are the situation of Ruta patavina, the most important species in the flowers euganeo patrimony.
Others mediterranean flora species present in this territory are: olive tree,cypresse tree and laurel.
DRY MEADOWS
Dry meadows are present in the south Hills, largely in the calcareous undultion between Arquà Petrarca, Valle S. Giorgio and Baone, these meadows derived to the range’s abandon not very produce called “vegri”.
The primal bush is made-up by some herbaceous species, expecially gramineae, jaggy and legumen, while the dry land and the neglected areas for a long time, host bushes that are pioneer and rustic, like: hawthorn, junipern,broom etc.
CHESTNUT’S WOOD
The chestnut’s wood develop on the volcanic side, expecially in the north, in a silicon land, coolness and depth.
The undergrowth, damp and rich of humus, is appropriate for the flowering like snowdrop, dogtooth violet, hellebore, anemone fregatella, ramson, Solomon’s seal, narcissist, black blueberry, the rare and the precious martagon and the S.Giovanni lily. There are present also laburnum and beechwood, a very important testimony in the glacial age.
OAK’S WOOD
The oak’s wood occupies the most part of the hot versant in the south, in a meadow not very deep and dry, expecially calcareous. The oak has a look radiant and open, with glades jazzed up by a species herbaceous admixture in a dry environment.
The underwood is rich of humus and there are: butcher’s broom , quickthorn, juniper, privet and heath bell. Shorter than the chestnut wood, there is the oak’s wood, which it occupies the areas not very attended and more untouched in the naturalistic part.
THE ROBINA’S BUSH
The robina is a foreigner plant for the European flora, it is original of the oriental coast of the north America, was imported in the ‘600 like ornamental species.
The robina spreaded around quickly and for this reason, has permitted to conquer the most part in the territory, except the originals woods. The robina was installed with a massive velocity , forming in a short time monotonous bush, with few arboreous plants and shock, like: ramson, white anemone,violet, lampascione, cows-and-calves and hellebore.
